These small rectangular shaped cement blocks are at the bottom of the trenches. The idea is that the reinforcing steel bar will sit on them with a gap underneath between ground and the steel.
The cement slabs therefore mean that when cement is poored into the foundation trenches it has space under the steel rebar to completely fill the trench and form the strongest foundations possible.
The constructor commented that the house looks very small at this stage with the wide trenches separating the living spaces. Once the walls start to go up things look very different.
