Construction began in february with four guys working on site plus the man in charge, who we referred to as "the constructor" ("el constructor" in Spanish). One of the first things he did was to buy all the steel reinforcement bar he thought he would need for the project to protect himself from changing steel prices.
While some of his team were preparing the trenches on the plot others were cutting this reinforcement steel, bending it, and tying it together. This is a time consuming part of the work and one that needs to be done well if the steel rebar will have the desired effect of strengthening the house and protecting it from earthquakes.
The work on the reinforcing bar is carried out in a small shelter the constructor built close to the building site, which is at the top of the photo.
